CHARACTER INFO
NAME: Rapunzel
CANON: Tangled
REFERENCE LINKS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangled
CHARACTER INFO: A single drop of sunlight fell from the heavens, creating a flower with magical healing powers. The flower was found by a woman named Gothel, who used it to maintain her youthful appearance for centuries. In these centuries, a kingdom sprang up nearby. When the pregnant queen grew ill, the king sent his men searching for the legendary flower and had it made into a broth which healed the queen. Her baby was born with a head of golden hair, which had inherited the flowers abilities. To celebrate, the king and queen launched a lantern into the sky. Everything was shiny until Gothel kidnapped the baby. She locked Rapunzel away in a tower and raised her as her own daughter, emotionally abusing her with jaunty songs about how awful the world is and how Rapunzel is too naïve and stupid to last on her own. Rapunzel never let this get her down, however. Being the natural manifestation of sunshine and optimism, she thrived as a perky, excitable and determined young woman. Though subservient to her mother and unable to stand up to her, even years of emotional abuse was not enough to keep her down for long. Every year on her birthday, Rapunzel would watch from her window as strange lights appeared in the sky; a tradition of the kingdoms, to launch floating lanterns in hopes that the princess would return one day.
Rapunzel decides she wants to go see these lights for her 18th birthday, however Gothel refuses to let her leave. Rapunzel delves into her sneaky side and tricks her mother into leaving for three days. She forces a thief named Flynn Rider, who stumbled across the tower looking for a place to hide, to take her to see them. A sweet and loving Disney Princess, yes, but the girl is not above blackmail and deception to get what she wants. Though initially trying to scare her away, she and Flynn grow close and begin to trust each other through their many mishaps, him even telling her his real name of ‘Eugene’. Rapunzel learns more about the outside world and grows as a person, getting over the fears Gothel instilled in her and gaining some independence. As they reach the kingdom, Gothel appears and tries to bring Rapunzel home. Failing this, she tricks Rapunzel into believing Eugene has betrayed her, and a heartbroken Rapunzel returns to the tower. Eventually Rapunzel realises she is the lost princess and finally stands up to her mother and tries to leave again, wanting to save Eugene who has been sentenced to death. Gothel does not like this plan, and being the wonderful mother she is, chains Rapunzel up. At her chosen canon point, Rapunzel is an independent and intelligent young woman who no longer believes herself weak and incapable. She’ll fight for what she wants and won’t be pushed around by others anymore. Rapunzel is cheeky and still very naïve, innocent but very courageous and resourceful, fighting off bad guys with nothing but her hair and a frying pan.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Rapunzel’s personality won’t change very much as a blank; she’ll be similar to her later character development. Without the memories of her mother complex and being told that without her she’ll be eaten by cannibals and trampled by rhinos, Rapunzel will be confident in herself. She’ll still have her perky optimism and perseverance, and definitely her naivety. She won’t be quite as excitable; being outside and meeting new people won’t be such a novelty to her. Living in Aather, surrounded by people and roaming free, she’ll adjust to it and believe it to be normal.
